David Pook injured in testing crash

David Pook, son of CART CEO Chris Pook, is in a critical care unit in a Phoenix hospital after the NASCAR Southwest featherlight late model he was testing suffered steering failure and he crashed head into the outer wall at Phoenix International Speedway. Pook will have to wear a neck imobilizing "HALO" device. He was wearing a HANS device and can probably attribute his remaining alive to this device after suffering neck injuries.

Glad he lived through and hope he is better soon.

I am disappointed that the IRL does not require a HANS device. It is really time that they stepped up to the plate and at least commissioned a study.

He was reported to have suffered "a clean fracture of his second cervical vertebra." That sounds very bad, but the latest report is that he "has been transferred out of the Intensive Neurological Care Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital and his condition has been upgraded to fair." Let's hope he makes a full recovery.

I thought the IRL made the HANS device mandatory about the same time CART did?

IRL was the first to make HANS mandatory, about 3 or 4 years ago, but it was only mandatory in races, but I think this year it's a blanket rule covering testing / qualy / races.

100% on IRL being first.

Remember until this year (2002), in CART it was only mandatory for ovals, not road courses.

I thought as much. I believe that CART has now made the HANS device mandatory for all races. Last year it was voluntary for road courses and only a few were not using it.
