Word has it a V8 Supercar can cost around $300,000 to build nowadays. That was the figure given a couple of years ago when Lowndes received the last new car HRT gave him I think.

spot on buckshot, i think it was in AA in 1999, when Lowdnes' new car was revealed, was said to have cost over $300,000. Debuted at Sandown, Then he went and totalled it at Calder Park.

It depends. A lot of cars have bits and pieces that carry over from previous cars. Things like engine, driveline, suspension, various electronic components etc can live on from car to car. Most of the cars that get sold on are just rollers/have all of the old junky bits and pieces in them unless you pay top dollar and recieve follow up support and data from their previous owners.
Word has it that a certain Sports Sedan that was recently built cost its owner $360,000, less their own labour. So if you were starting from scratch, and didn't hold back on anything, you could spend well over $300,000 on a Supercar. Would things such as labour be included in the estimated build cost of a car these days? |

not sure about labour being included, but your right about things being carried over. The AU Falcon has all the EL running gear.

I remember Crompton saying during one race last year that an engine alone can set you back -in his words "well over $50,000" !!!

Oh easily, and that wouldn't include all of the expense that is spent on developing engines... it seems as though every man and his dog do their own in house these days.

ahh yeas, on top of the building of the car, you have to do the development to make it competitive, which costs $$$

Labour is surely the greater part of the price, unless a lot of work is done outside the team.
I believe that a car may cost $300,000 to develop and build, but a replica can probably be put together immediately for half that figure. |

On the V8 (avesco) website they have a section that tells you the costs of a supercar. At least they did until they changed the site.
I have just been there and everything has moved, it will take a while to find all the things I use to read again. |

The problem is, that an engine that gets you 550HP costs diddly squat, but for each addition HP after those, the costs start. The thing is, with such a controlled, and close category, that the teams simply can't afford to settle for 550HP, so they all have to spend top dollar to get every available piece of squirt out of their engines. It's the same with suspension, etc etc..

Buying a V8 Supercar is the easy part, running one competitively for an entire season is were the real cost comes in!

How much do you reckon it would cost to buy a seat in a relatively competitive car for Bathurst?

It depends on the team I suppose, their finances, and how chummy who are with the team owner. I suppose $30,000 wouldn't be out of the question (?)... but saying that, most of the teams that run the 1000 are crack professional squads, and most of the buy drives are farily expensive. Most of the inexpensive sort of drives would be in the Konica race. One quote I heard for a talented driver to do the Konica series for a level one team was $175,000, which is a bargain..

Was speaking to Richard Mork a few weeks ago and he said for him to attend one round of the Konicas costs him $15,000.

600 + Horsepower is whats required these days
From scratch an engine can cost you $90,000 to $100,000 the yankee dollar hasn't helped this! The price quoted for a car in 99 was $300,000 and this included labour, It would have to be atleast $350,000 now dont foget the cars are not made from a body shell anymore, as the shell is constructed with the cage and all the body mods included from scratch |

Amazingly Trevor Crittenden's Commodore team back in 2000 was asking for some ridiculous sum to drive their car, I investigated chasing some cash to get the drive but decided not to become involved in it because no one involved in the actual preparation of the car knew which way was up. My decision was vindicated as the drive got cheaper and cheaper up till about a week before the race when two poor Kiwi *******s decided to kick-the-tin for about $10,000.00 or so. Sure enough, the car only lasted one lap of pre-qualifying. As for paying to drive someone elses car at Bathurst, no thanks. I'll just stick to driving our 600hp Sports Sedan. I get more of a buzz out of the satisfaction of getting our home made car around the track quickly than I ever could struggling around Bathurst in a ****box and getting in the way of the quick stuff. CD. |

To answer the original question, you can get a VS or EL, ready to race for $85-100K. Engine prices were quoted above, a gearbox is $35K, a rear end is $15K.
The going rate for a co-drive at Bathurst in a privateer car in the 1000 is you pay for the fuel and tyres, ie $20K. |

How much is it for a 3/4/5 year old car (Holden or Ford) to buy nowadays. Also how much would it cost to run (rebuild costs, etc) in a club race series for a year. That is if there are any around to get a price guide.

Running costs will depend on revs used... cut the revs by 500 and you'll likely go a season on an engine rebuild..
No idea of actual costs, however... there are cars advertised in some mags, but I don't get them. |
