Jason Bargwanna's double summersault with tripple twist.
That was some frightening prang. When I saw the replay, I thought that Murphy was wrong but it did not appear as if Murphy intended anything other than a slight tap in the rear. Certainly the consequences were far worse than I would have expected from the slight nerf in the rear.
However the contratemps in the pits afterwards has more serious repercussions as Doug Murphy was recorded on TV as clearly saying that he would do it again. That was a dumb move - the least he could have done was gone back and apologised. This could land him in more hot water, as that one statement did bring the sport into disrepute in my opinion. Jason was very, very lucky he was not seriously injured. Last edited by Valve Bounce; 15 Apr 2002 at 03:47. |

What race was that, Valve?
We get to see some of the Aussie races here, usually a few months after the fact. |

That was yesterday's race at Philip Island. Just after the start, Murphy seemed to push the side and rear of Jason's car ever so slightly, enough to put Bargwanna on the grass where he began to slide at about an angle of 30 to 45 degrees to the track. The car then hit some sort of a low barrier of tyres which rolled then flipped the car back onto the track, where it seemed to twist vertically on its nose in some sort of macabre death dance, ripping the car apart almost completely. About the only thing you could salvage from the car would be the gear lever knob.

WOW!
I might get a chance to see the coverage of that on the highlight reels, or when (if) they televise it here in a couple of months. |

Funnily enough Bargs did actualy save the gear lever knob and apparantly tried to insert it into Greg Murphy.

Picture this - opnly one wheel still left on car, the rear axle lying on the ground after it parted company WHILST the car was in mid-air... |

The one thing that first image shows up - the crowd - or distinct lack of one! Normally at an Island V8 meeting you have the main straight 3-4 deep. Yesterday, TV coverage showed basically single file all the way along - small pockets of 2-3 deep, but not in many places...

Yeah all jokes aside I was glad to see Bargs step out of the car fighting fit. It did make me feel sick to my stomach almost to see that car destroying itself in mid air like that...shades of Lowndes at Calder.

I like the Nancy Boy slap on the wrist cams gave Murphy. He should have been told to park his car for the rest of the day. I am really starting to believe that Cams or Avesco are on Tom Walkinshaws payroll. MAybe the could send Cochrane across to set up Phoniex F1

Well, I saw the slight nerf that Murphy did on Jason, and we see this in V8 saloon races all the time. It really did not look like a hard bump to me, but once Jason's car touched the soggy grass, he was gone. It was trully frightening the way the car rolled and flipped and twisted. Reminded me of the freestyle skiers in the Winter Olympics doing those jumps and twists.

one thing i noticed with the flip is how easily the rear axle assembly ripped out from the car. this has happened a lot, with drivers just nudging walls and then the diff looks like it wants to slide off the car.
why is this so?? does it have anything to do with the watts linkage setup these cars run??? |

I was at G.R.M today and the all the boys down there say that Jas is A-O.K. just a tad sore in parts but the car did look like a bit of a concern. The guys were putting it on the jig at the time and things were'nt looking good. They do have the spare car from Bathurst but for whatever reason they really dont want to use it for the next race in two weeks time to ease the pressure in the workshop.

Yes Calais it does, Theres not much lateral strength in the way the diff housings are mounted to the cars. With Bargs bingle as he hit the tyre wall/embankment sideways the rear of the car gets sucked in to the tyres and grabs hold of it but the momentum of the car was so much that as it bounced out and up from the wall this pulled the diff out of the car. In fact by the looks of it as it was spinning in the air the only thing left to try to hold the diff in place was the brake fluid lines!!!

But that's Phillip Island <g> - it took me 90 minutes to get *off* the Island in November after Island Magic - and I didn;t leave till around 6:15 pm
Once off the Island though the traffic just flows - it's the three roads all leading into one to physically get off the Island that hurst. |

I guess 25kms for the whole single line from the island (where we averaged 80kms hours) could be called flowing...........but it did stop on numerous occasions.
I've been to the island a number of times.....it was pretty busy on the weekend.....trust me |
