BAR weird rear wing

Looks weird. What do you think?

(Hopefully someone with a bit of technical insight can shed some light on this)

isn't it one of those wing covers that all teams are using as soon as the cars come into the pit lane?

obviously, once the cars are on track nobody can see what the wings look like, don't those covers do a top job!

I thought that too but it seems to be made of a reflective material. Not the tarp type that the teams use. That car needs all the help it can get. Go wing cover!!

I could be wrong but are you talking about the winglets on the outside of the endplates? I wonder if they smooth the air off the tires?

Y'know if they make those winglets strong enough(how easy is that) then cars would't launch up in the air when they touch.I thought of this years ago-why cant the fia(notice lack of capitalization)

That is most definitely a wing cover. With some jokey fakery around its nether parts.

on top of the wing is definitely the wing cover and the extended span of narrow board below the endplates seems to be part of the diffuser.

usually air from the diffuser is sucked by the small below board to create downforce.

my guess is that the extended span is to further suck and further smoothen the air flow around the rear tyres as to provide more downforce.

I have found something that BAR had used last year at suzuka(thanks to luc)....Amazed at how they compromise on downforce with such settings

I don't have a clue. I saw it on www.pitpass.com and I don't know whether they're referring to the winglet or the wing (cover (?) . That's why I posted it here.

BAR run new wing at Silverstone test
19-04-2002

Although they never mentioned it in their press release, BAR were running an experimental additional wing at this week's Silverstone test.
Once again it was our friend Wendy Lewis who alerted us to the fact, readers may remember that earlier in the week it was Wendy who alerted us to Marc Gene's massive crash at Bridge.

BAR's new technical director Geoff Willis has already warned that the team faces an uphill battle and that last week's performance was a 'flash in the pan' and not an indication that the Brackley outfit has finally solved its problems.

However like Jaguar, BAR lack downforce and clearly this is something that Willis is concentrating on.

Willis has admitted that there are a number of mechanical issues with the BAR004 - issues such as weight distribution and the car's centre of gravity - issues which, according to Willis are going to be difficult to solve in the short term. However, issues as aerodynamics says Willis can be addressed more easily - tell that to Jaguar.

In recent years we've seen a number of novel approaches to the 'downforce' issue with Jordan often being the most innovative. However BAR's attempt is extremely unusual.

We understand the team only ran the new wing on Wednesday, on both Olivier Panis' and Anthony Davidson's car's, but didn't run with the wing, which as you can see they made no effort to hide, on Thursday.

For a more detailed 'close-up' of the new additional wing... click here

And no, this is not a late April Fool!
Have I been had?
