Does Barrichello have a bad sense of direction?
Why does he (and I assume all of them) have a ma of the circuit on his steering wheel. Does he need reminding which way the next corner goes or something?!

Naw.. I think the little map reminds him which button to press at which corner (the auto downshift).

Still, it seems odd after all those miles of testing and racing that they stil need reminding.

not that he needed it anyway today . he only needed a map of the pitlane . Better than Dario Franchitti in the champcars though , as he had a picture of the Honda Boss on his steering wheel at Motegi this weekend .
How sad is that ? |

I remember Irvine had a map on his car a while back . Anyone know why they would need a map on the steering wheel .?

Irvine had a map on his steering wheel to save him having to come in for directions. (Those car to pit calls are expensive you know.)
Rubens doesn't have a map; his steering wheel simply has a sign that says "Face it: You don't need a map. You're going nowhere." |

I've seen a picture of Mika Hakkinen from 1999 with a circuit map in the cockpit.

No this is quite common. If a driver has a crash and gets a little misplaced due to shock it helps them get their barings, and at some places, helps them find their way back to the pits.
Its more common in Sportscar and other series, where the drivers have to walk back by themselves. Often in F1 drivers have guys on mopeds that ride them back to the pits. THOUGHT 2: Different program for different part of the track, requiring the pressing of a button? Perhaps to assist in the car performance per lap. Any thoughts? |

I remember Brundle saying that drivers use it as a quick reference point for the corner numbers over the radio.
