Is CART an option?

Sarah,

Even though CART is still in a state of flux, it looks as though the cost to compete is going to drop substantialy. CART may be an affordable option.

It's not a tried and true route to F1, but its still considered the number 2 open wheel series in the world.

Good Luck

Hi shaggy,

Yes CART is always an option, although to be honest it doesn't really excite me in the same way as F1 does. I feel that as soon as you go to the US, that's it, you're a US driver, and can largely forget about F1. JPM is the exception though.

I'll probably give it another 18months and if I haven't made any progress in Europe, I'll have a serious look at the US.

Why dont you persue any opportunity? Whether its sportscars, CART, or even NASCAR. Your goal should be to get a solid drive, and hopefully one where you can get paid. Sure all drivers want to live the Grand Prix glory but your comments mark you out as someone who's in racing for the excitement not the passion

Sarah,

I don't count JPM as an exception. He was already testing with Williams when Sir Frank traded him for Zanardi in 99. I think even without going to CART, JPM was F1 bound.

Of the three CART drivers that have tried moving up to F1 in the last 10 years(Andretti, Villeneuve, and Zanardi), Villeneuve is the only one that had any success.

The other reason I mentioned CART as an option is a rumor that I can across about F3000 teams looking at CART. It's pure speculation at this point and you're probably closer to the source than I am.

*********
In an interview with veteran motorsports journalist Gordon Kirby, CART CEO Chris Pook commented on the car counts for 2003.

"Of the three teams coming in that will give me four more cars that will take me to sixteen," said Pook. "I've got to get four more cars to get to twenty. I'm prepared to run eighteen cars. We're going to look to some of the guys that are on the fence currently and whatever we do we will have eighteen cars here, and we're going to use the company's resources very prudently.

6/15/02-We've heard that there are up to three new teams interested in joining the CART series for next season. One of these, according to the paddock, is one of the IRL foundation teams. The others appear to be European F3000 teams that are interested in stepping up their competition and profile. One of these we hear, is an Italian outfit.

Again. It's a rumor. But definitely a little tidbit to file in the back of your head.

Your timeframe of 18 months is pretty sound. By that time, should the need arise for you to look stateside(knock on wood that it won't), CART will, hopefully have its ducks in order.

But...

CART's in Rockingham in Sept. It doesn't hurt to network.

Didn't Zanardi go from CART to F1 then back to CART?

To be precise, he went from F1 to CART to F1 back to CART again. Drove for Lotus back in 1993 & 94, hit the states in 96, won in '97 and 98, did F1 in '99, then did CART again.

That is interesting. I was under the impression CART teams/engine suppliers are jumping to IRL. But the tide could be turning i guess

I'll concede the Zanardi point. I forgot about his prior F1 days.

Villeneuve won the 97 World Championship. I'd say he's a little more successful than Montoya, right now. In a few years, it may be a different story.

CART and the IRL? Don't get me started. The tide is in the IRL's favor, but with the influx of factory support, costs are going to skyrocket in the IRL to field a competitive car. CART's will drop. It's kind of a role reversal thing.

I'll stop here before I take up a whole page on my opinions about the CART/IRL split.

Hi Russfield,

Nothing could be further from the truth. I'd like to race in the US or wherever. My mum passed away recently after a battle from cancer and I have to take care of the young ones in the family. So travelling full time to the states is out for at least another year.

Best regards,

Sarah

It's True, my myth Frank Williams,ha said that the CART e' the better way than to train itself in order to compete in F1: because is the only formula that joins one single-seat powerful , fast and mixed circuits and high professionalism...

Ciao !
