22 limit, 25 enquiries.

According to Chris Pook, there have been 25 enquiries for entries into the CART FedEx series next year, with only 22 cars being allowed in the field. Good news for a series which only fielded 18 cars least time out.

Is there information as to who the new squads consist of? Are they F3000 teams from Europe, or new US-based squads? Is there an IRL team among them, as has been rumoured?

Then again, what's an enquiry? I could enquire, but there wouldn't be much substance behind it...

"Letters of Intent" was the phrase Mr. Pook used. There are also four others in the wings.

Mr. Pook has said that he must see a signed sponsorship contract before these letters become firm commitments to the grid. So this isn't spin, for once; it's simply a statement of where they are at present.

Why is there a limit to only 22 cars? i think we might be able to see 25 cars next season if things go well.

How many cars can Ford support? Is this the reason for the 22 car limit? Surely the teams, tracks, and fans wouldn't mind more than 22 cars...

I think it is only down to supply that there will only be 22 cars allowed. If Ford and Lola could handle more, then we might see that number lifted.

Pook has used the phrase "quality, not quantity" to explain the 22 car field. He has also mentioned the fact that more than 22 will require an extra plane to get to Europe, Australia, and Japan.

If you ask me, it's all spin, and the real reason are the engines, but I don't understand why that's being left unsaid.

Pook has also said, that of the 25 inquires, only 17 are considered "solid".

30 cars, curse you! What, is Mosely setting the rules for CART now?

I totally agree. 22 cars? To me 22 cars is never enough in a top-line racing series. We need depth to a field, otherwise the achievements of those who win races/championships will always be doubted (would they have done it with more competition?). To me F1 (and sadly F3000) are now far less fascinating simply because of the lower quantity of cars entered. It's sad that CART's going the same way, whatever the reasons. The more entries there are, the more potential for midfield battles and incidents, the things that can make an otherwise dull race, and the more there is to talk about in general.

BTW, anyone know the identity of the F3000 team rumoured to be enquiring about CART? I *think* I read it was Italian, which surely means Coloni??

...or of course Durango. Knew I was missing one... Then I suppose maybe it's not necessarily an International F3000 team, but maybe a Euro 3000 team? Plenty of Italian squads in that championship. It would be good to see an F3000 team break into CART, now that F1 is a closed shop for graduating teams.

the more the merrier, but the first thing is set a limit and reach it, whatever reasons are in it.
