3state should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Anyone else notice the contradiction?

Did anyone else notice the ironic contradiction in the following press conference following Magny-Cours? The following transcript comes courtessy of F1.com:

"Q: Michael, I would just like to ask how you are going to celebrate tonight. I heard you are going to smoke a cigar very peacefully at home.
MS: We haven't arranged anything so we will have to see what comes up and find out. I don't know what I am going to do, I have no idea.

Q: But the cigar?
MS: I think everybody knows that I do that after the race so there is no sort of secret, but I don't see the need to mention it to the whole world. I am sort of an idol to the young kids and I shouldn't be smoking, so please..."

Has Michael looked at the livery of his Ferrari lately, and who the major sponsor is? Doesn't he think kids wouldn't notice that the winning car is effectively, the Marlboro Car? Seems a tad hypocritical.

LOL...I think Malboro as part of their contractual agreement must insist that Michael and Rubens should light up a celebratory fag right up there on the podium. What better way to celebrate a race win than kick back right there on the podium with a well-deserved smoke?

...and in true Chip Ganasse style, Jean Todt should be seen with an unlit Marlboro in his mouth throughout the entire race...and the pit crew after a lightning pitstop should celebrate by passing around a packet, kicking back, and lighting up a smoke.

I mean, if I was Marlboro, I'd be insisting on maximum return for my sponsorship dollar!

Does anyone actually pay any attention to the ads on an F1 car??? On some cars sure, they stick out, like the big Magnum 'M' on the Minardis or the Compaq logos on the Williams, but the most obvious logo on the Ferrari is that horrific Vodafone squiggle...

Valve Bounce has been held in scrutiny for further testing
Mark, where have you been? There are no Compaq logos on the Williams anymore.

... its funny how different cultures speak. In the US that statement could cause a riot.

Back to the subject. I dont think there is anything hypocritical at all in the statement. He cant help who sponsors the team. What he is saying is that he would never want to influence a youngster to begin smoking. There is nothing wrong with that.

Same thing happened when Lleyton Hewitt won Wimbledon and he had a picture of him taken with a cigar in his mouth. Groups were up in arms about it saying he's making it cool to smoke.

That's just BS.

OVERSTEER should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Well this story where if a kid sees a Formula 1 driver sponsored by a tobacco company, they're going to start to smoke, it's utter BS, the Government are using this as a scapegoat, they should be educating kids from a young age what could happen to them if they smoke, and people who are suing the Tobacco companies for illneses they have suffered as a result of smoking is BS too.
Hell i've been following motorsport for nearly 10 years and i've only tried smoking but it tasted like sh*t so never tried again, and I was drunk at the time

A message to all the governments of the world, Tobacco sponsorship in sport doesn't mean kids are going to take up smoking, I haven't for one!!!!!!

END OF POLITICAL MESSAGE!!!!!!

The picture I have of F1 drivers these days is that they are extremely fit sportsmen whose diet (and personal trainers) wouldn't allow smoking.

Ok, i'll come clean!

Just to clarify guys, this posting was meant to be slightly provocative, and mostly tongue in cheek. Just a bit of fun. while I'm not a Schuey fan, I don't really think he was being inconsistent or hypocritical here, and actually i respect him for saying it...F1 can be SO serious sometimes...

Alrighty, some other thoughts about maximising sponsorship returns.

(1) Vodafone should insist that all communication between the pit crew and drivers (Rubens and Michael) should be through a hands-free kit installed in the ferrari and connected to the Vodafone network.

(2) All pit-stops should include a compulsory tic-tac.

Again, thesse companies invest a lot of sponsorship money into these teams, and I think its only right and fair they they get maximum return for their dollar!

[I agree with this theory and thats why I would like to see Durex back in Formula 1.]

thart's hilarious, although the mind boggles. I presume they'd used ribbed Durex comdoms for better traction?

On the point of sponsorship I seriously recommend to Jordon that they being using the services of DHL to deliver them to the finish line. Unlike Jordon, at least DHL guarantees speedy delivery, and it seems Jordon aren't able to make it under their own volition
