The new Mini
So has any one heard any news about wheather or not the new Mini will be rally raced in the near future? I know that there are plans to base a club type race series around it but I would LOVE to see it in the WRC. The trend seems to be making the cars smaller anyway and it is not much smaller than the Focus or Peugeot.

I wouldn't be suprised if they develop it for Super 1600, but a Mini WRC? Well, they'd have to adapt a 2.0L 3-series engine to begin with.

I'm sure there was something in Autosport (last Thurs edition) about Minis being course cars or similar on an event. Must remember to dig out the piece.
I think BMW should get something sorted, at least at S1600 |

In WRC class, the production car (and WRC car) needs to be at least 4000mm in length - that's why Peugeot had to make a bunch of 206's with longer bumpers before they could homologate in WRC.
For Super1600 the car should be less than 4000mm, so normal 206 with standard length bumpers are o.k. I think the Mini is too short for WRC but o.k. for Super1600. |

The mini is too small for but as said its good for s1600. their good 1600cc engine is blown though not normally aspirated.
it was also tested for rallying by a few well known and successful mini (good old one) drivers who all said it was pretty **** i am told... the mini cup seems populer if you like circuit stuff though. |

Why do you guys think the teams are going with smaller cars now? I figure that the minimum weight limit is easily reached these days so could it just be for a smaller turning radius to make the cars quicker on the twister stages? I bet all the teams were wishing for smaller wheel bases during the first two days of the Germany rally!

Yes, the smaller cars are quicker on the twisty stuff. Audi took a chunk out of the middle of the Quattros to reduce their length/wheelbase back in the '80s, and the 205 was also a successful car.
Maybe Ford will look at the Fiesta as the basis for their next generation WRC car, in the same way that Skoda are developing the Fabia WRC. |

Lighter, more agile because of the shorter shorter wheelbase...
If Ford crams the Focus WRC's powertrain into a Fiesta, that'll prove these rules are just _way_ too liberal. |
