Big crash in Japanese Formula Dream (F1 support race)
Horrendous pre-race crash mars Japanese Grand Prix-
Driver in support race suffers broken vertebrae Japanese driver Hirokazu Nagaya suffered an horrendous crash Sunday in a race preceding the season-closing Formula One Grand Prix. The 22-year-old, who this year has been racing in Japan's Formula Three series, clipped the tyres of a car in front of him around the Suzuka circuit's Spoon Corner, sending him somersaulting through the air and into the fence. An ambulance rushed to the scene and white sheets were quickly erected around the crash site. A trackside camera showed wreckage flying towards it as the car tumbled through the air, but then went off air. Race stewards said Nagaya was unconscious and had been airlifted to hospital by helicopter where he later regained consciousness. "He came round at the hospital but has broken his sixth cervical vertebrae," a race official said. "However, he has not suffered any internal bleeding." He was unable to say whether Nagaya would be paralyzed as a result of the accident. It was not immediately clear if anyone else was injured in the crash. Nagaya had been making a guest appearance in the ninth of the 11-race Formula Dream series, which he competed in last year. Shortly afterwards Stewards announced that the race had been cancelled to prevent any delay in the start to the Formula One Grand Prix, due to begin at 0530 GMT. Our thoughts go out to the driver and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery. R.S. Source AFP Last edited by Marcel ten Caat; 13 Oct 2002 at 06:27. |

Is this they are saying changed from a neck brace to Hans for this race and if he hadn't he would have died?

WOW! I have never seen an open-wheel car do that!
I counted nearly 8 complete rolls end over end..amazing he survived that. And imagine the shock that camera man got, almost having his head taken off! |

Great... What ya wanna bet there'll be a new chicane at that corner next year?
I feel really sorry for the guy, that a _bad_ crash, and a very lucky cameraman... But we all know this is going to turn into an excuse to ruin Suzuka. |

je5us chr1st. that was some crash. He's lucky that the rear of the car took the heaviest of the impacts. The car stood up really well. What make is it? The chassis manufacturer should be proud. But the driver certainly was shook around a lot.

A racing friend of mine in Japan said that he hasn't heard anything new, so I guess that means that he hasn't suffered any paralysis.
