F1 too expensive for Pirelli.
From www.f1-live.com
I'd always hoped to see more than just 2 tyre suppliers involved in F1, but it seems that it's just too expensive and Pirelli won't be involved in the near future which is a real shame, the show could be alot better if the likes of Pirelli and Goodyear came in and along with Bridgestone and Michelin all had a top team to focus on. Tyre supplier Pirelli left the Formula One series back in 1986 with 42 GP wins to its name and while they have admitted a desire to make a return to the sport, the Italian company has stated it simply can't afford to. Pirelli president Marco Tronchetti believes that the series should pay tyre manufacturers to take part instead of the other way around and due to the enormous amount of money being asked to add to the competition, they simply don't believe it's a viable option. “F1 ought to pay the manufacturers to provide tyres because tyres help the show at pit-stops," Tronchetti said. "Instead they request monstrous sums of money and we are forced not to take part. We'd like to return to grand prix racing, but the figures are not sustainable.” |

once again , it all comes down to costs doesnt it .......the FIA have got to address this problem properly and make it so tyre manufactuers cant afford not to be in F1

Well pirelli arent one of the biggest tyre manufacturers around anyway, with no disrespect meant to them but they are in the same leauge as Dunlop. The only big tyre manufacturer not to enter F1 as of yet is Good Year. They have enough cash to enter u can bet on that and if they do they will be up there with Bridgestone.

But Pirelli were in it before, and they won, they could obviously afford it back then, wether or not they are one of the biggest or not is irrelevant imo, F1 needs as many manufacturers in it as possible.

I thought Goodyear pulled out as they didn't agree with the grooves in tyres...

It was a good excuse, but they were also annoyed that after being sole supplier for so long they weren't being listened to in regard to the tyre rules that were being implemented.
They also wanted to concentrate on their domestic racing as they were being hammered in that as well. |

It was a convenient excuse for the normal Goodyear activity of pulling out of any competition. They cant run ads saying they won "450 races in 2002" when they have to race in series with competing brands

The article has the dates wrong.
Pirelli last pulled out of F1 at the end of 1991, their final victory being the 1991 Canadian Grand Prix, with Nelson Piquet in the Benetton-Ford. |
