Inside story '1'

As you can imagine I get to hear lots of inside stories...which I can't tell...because Anthony's testing work is confidential. (Not that he tells me important technical stuff) But if people are interested I can share funny stories and incidents which can and do happen)

I will head all these threads "inside story" 1, 2, 3 etc so you'll know if you've read them before.

I have alrady given his 'rather graphic' example of how good F1 brakes are elsewhere.

This tale comes from the last test at Barcelona...on day 2 Ant clocked up a total of 97 laps...it was a reliability test. 97 laps was more than anyone else achieved on the day, most importantly the car ran faultlessly...except for a wheel bearing failure at the end of the day...

The result was 'pad knockoff' which mean't that the brake pedal went to the floor unexpectedly...at 300kph! He brought the car in without incident.

So test drivers...like aircraft test pilots are the 'unsung hero's' of our sport.

They're not there just tooling around...or just going for a time!...as I've read JV quoted somewhere. Test drivers can't make demands on team personnel or equipment (Grand Prix drivers...do!) JV is very good at twisting! (JB look out!)

If this thread is of interest...let me know...and I'll 'spill a few beans' from time to time...and maybe even tell some tales!..."Somebody stop me!"

I suppose they don't have a pit lane speed limit during testing then?

Rennen, you should label these stories "Tall tales but True!!"

But seriously, please come back with more .

I suppose this happened out on the track, and not in the pit lane.

Nooo!!!!
I am one of the few people that even cares what happens to BAR here. Damn you VB . Anyway, I was serious with my questions. We hear a lot about Toyota and Jaguar but nothing about BAR and Honda. Seriously, your input would be greatly appreciated, I for one would love to read something that is not just press speculation.

BAR News

Rennen,

Keep the information coming!

I'd be curious to know if you have any thoughts on the spare car issue at BAR that Richards has been on about?

The spare car issue isn't an issue at all, all it means is that Jenson will be in the same situation that Olivier was in this year. JV has first call on the T-car and it will be set up for him at every race, but if Jenson needs it and JV isn't using it then he can have it. The only time Jenson would find himself without it would be if there was a race like Spa'98 and bot race cars were written off before the restart. JV would get the car then and Jenson would have to sit out.

Welcome Jellybabe,

I'm aware of the T-car situation Jellybabe,I was wondering if Rennen had anything else to add that we may not be privy to.You are right in saying that the only time the spare car is an issue is when there are situations during a race such as the one you raised above.

Which driver or team,if any,do you support?

Hello Tye

I support BAR, Ant, JV, Olivier and Mika Salo (possibly not in that order!).

I think I'm privvy to about as much BAR info as Rennen, although not always from the same sources!

I'm a huge Villeneuve fan.I was sad to see Olivier go to Toyota but I guess that is the way of the land sometimes.I think BAR lost someone who was very determined and dedicated. His input will be sorely missed,I hope he does well with Toyota.

It is good to see another Mika Salo fan,I'm one as well.Sad what happened to him, however I think his racing days are far from over.He will show up somewhere I'm sure.He showed us what he could do in a top car while he drove briefly for Ferrari.

Hello Jellybabe, and a big, big welcome to you. I hope that you will keep posting lots here because when you reach 1000 posts, you qualify for the lucky draw for the Ferrari. It's drawn when everyone reaches 1000 posts.

By the way, what do you guys think of the last session at Jerez, Sundays (not saturday's) times?

You tell me!! You said you are privvy to info from BAR. So what is the impression of Ant's fast times there with both Bunsen and Jacques, and also Richards? What is their body language?
