We had a thread on this a while back, I think it was just the fact that teams want to create a "brand identity" like they do in NASCAR, with driver using the same numbers year after year. Im not sure about that though, and #1 is unlucky at Indy....

The number 1 is kept free though should the champion decide to use it.

Since when #1 is unlucky at Indy? Since Al Jr. failed to qualify in 1995?

And Bobby Rahal DNQ'd in 1993. I'm sure there are other examples.

Valentino Rossi does the same thing, he has always used his lucky #46 in every series, even as the champion.

He's number 4.

Anyway, I completely agree - the champion should use number 1.

Just as the number 1 should not be given to a non-champion, ie Junquiera in CART.

4 has been Pennzoil car number quite long, actually. On NASCAR, in the other hand, Pennzoil car is using #1 (Steve Park).

Hornish should keep #4, its a better number. (more lucky)

I'm not always a fan of teams taking the #1, it saves money to keep the number you have.

not if you ask the chinese - they shun the number 4 like its evil or something...

I don't think you can go past the simple prestige of having a big 1 on your car rubbing it in to everyone else that you are officially 'The Best'.

$ in chinese and japanese-is pronouced shi-(shee) also the word for death, however, there was a fan vote before hornish came along- who was the champ back then...scott sharp was 'co-champion in 96-so #1 could not be shared and the fan vote occured in 2000 when buddy lazier won the championship, they voted he should keep his number whichever it was 29 i think, so he opted not for #1 and so the champ never used it, i think Hornish just wasn't given the option, but the champ ought to wear the number, This Indy car idea of not is rubbish. it isoopen wheel for pete's sake.
