David McManus should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

What is the lowest position a GP winner has ever started from?
What is the highest number of places made up between a drivers starting and finishing positions?

I ask because last week the winner Barrichello started from 18th, and Button started 23rd on grid (after stalling) and finished 4th, an increase of 19 places.

The lowest ever grid position a GP winner has started from is (I believe) 22nd. John Watson in 1980-something (between 1980 and 1982, I think).

I know it was John Watson, 22nd (last) to 1st

But I'm not sure which GP it was...

Wasn't it a USGP; early 1980's? '82/'83?

Something in the early 80s and I think it was at Phoenix.

I meant Long Beach - I was thinking of something else (that obviously happened at Phoenix).

Something else that happened at Phoenix? How about 1991... Pier-Luigi Martini on pole in the Minardi right until the last second when Berger pipped him to it. Minardi's only front row start. Marvellous.

(Of course, with the Renault engines you'll have to get use to them... )

But is the Renault engine a certainty, 'Backmarker'?()
