Merchandise- what's it mean to you?

RPM recently had a story on the merchandising industry in V8 Supercar. Where are you at when it comes to team/driver gear?

I'd rather spend the money on my car or a new helmet, racesuit, tools, something for the home or garage or save up for a trip to watch an overseas race.

I always bought HRT stuff that I liked because Brock drove for them.

Now I buy Team Brock stuff (can't wait to see the new range) but I normally only but the team pit shirt and a jumper.

I like to buy stuff when the lions den shop near me (parramatta westfields) is having a sale as you get some good bargains.

It's to expensive and changes every year. It's a con but the most profitable thing in the paddock.A few years ago it was HRT's 3rd biggest sponser.
most of it is just cheap Chinese rubbish anyway.

I work part time in the merchandise industry, so I'm fairly well exposed to the stuff. I don't buy out the catalouge, but get a few things every year- heck, spending every weekend at the track, you need something to wear!

So far this year I've picked up some dirt cheap stuff from last year, a Supercheap team shirt, and a 00 anorak (only because it's perfect for the -10 degrees out at Warwick ). Of the new season stuff, I've picked up a SHR jumper, but on the whole the SHR stuff is a bit of a disappointment, and a Pirtek polo, which is really nice quality- all of the SBR stuff is very good.

I always like picking up local things, like the fire and rescue club t-shirt would be one of my faves, and I'll probably get something up at the rally of Qld.

jetsetter I'm not allowed any more framed photo's. If I havn't got motorsport or Souths (no wise cracks) on the wall it is a rare photo from one of our 4wd weekends.

Rocket: I have a Mazda flag that Moffat and Hansford both autographed.

I've got some gear from previous seasons but none current- it's expensive and you look like everyone else in the crowd. Each season, it changes anyway- it is a con really but there are some useful things around like bags and backpacks which last for years.

I think the merchandise is fantastic for the sport. Now, I don't buy it at all, but I think it is great for the public to get dressed intheir favourite teams colours. Whether that be team Ford, team HRT or team Lowndes, it's great to get behind your favourites marque/team/driver.
And you sort of become a silent sponsor as well. The money the teams can make from a successful merchandise effort is staggering. Tell me HRT aren't making a few mill per year with their 5 truck loads of goodies they bring to the track. They've now even got a shop in Sydney somewhere which sells most of their red apparel.

You also become a silent sponsor walking around town with the sponsors logos all over your clothing
