McLaren-Mercedes: the beginning
Can someone direct me towards somewhere I can find out about the origins of the partnership which has been so successful? As I recall, the original plan was that Mercedes-Benz would come back to F1 with Sauber, I think in 1994, with Michael Schumacher and Karl Wendlinger as pedallers. Of course, things didn't quite work out like that, and Sauber missing their chance at greatness gave McLaren an opportunity to climb out of the post-Senna slump. So what happened?

Simply, I think, it was that McLaren and Peugeot wasn't working. Both in F1 and possibly McLaren wanted more from a partner. Mercedes wasn't improving with Sauber as much as they liked.
Match made in heaven. The Mercedes came on strong in 1997, the McLaren came on strong at more or less the same time. Throw in getting Newey and it was only a short time before Mika showed us what we all though him capable of. |
