best crash

I know this season has been one of the best but you still like to see the driver come out unharmed but carnage all round the track so what is your fave collision of the season???

I think we can discount the crashes in which drivers were hurt - Button @ Chicane du Port, Monte Carlo, Firman @ Turn 4, Hungaroring - 'cos that's just masochistic and tasteless.

But of all the others, in descending order:

Alonso @ Arquibancadas, Interlagos (if you don't coun't that as an injury one, think he was OK)
sparks, tyres everywhere, spinning like a top; HUGE

Webber @ Arquibancadas, Interlagos
three wheels off at high speed side on into wall

Wilson, Montoya, Pizzonia, M Schumacher, Verstappen, Button @ Curva do Sol, Interlagos
hilarious to watch; 1-by-1 6 drivers just gracefully sliding off into the wall in exactly the same place

lap 1 pile up @ Nordkurve, Hockenheim
Raikkonen bore the brunt of it, quite a few involved

Firman, Panis @ Senna S, Interlagos
quite dramatic suspension failure and collision

Barrichello @ Turn 1, Hungaroring
dramatic suspension failure at high speed

Raikkonen, Pizzonia @ start, Catalunya
think Kimi went in the air a bit?; front of car was mangled

lap 1 pile up @ Selangor Chicane, Sepang
cars everywhere, but very slow speed, though

da Matta, @ Parabolica, Monza
tyre blow out sent him spinning at high speed

Coulthard, Button @ Elf, Catalunya
straight into the side of him

Barrichello, Montoya @ Turn 2, Indianapolis
not very dramatic, but had a big affect on the championship

M Schumacher, Sato @ Chicane, Suzuka
could have cost TGF the title - shame that, eh?

Any others?

The biggest crash was Alonso's,. but Webber's alone had been a big one too.

I did like Alonso's airplane impressions (BOTH of em! ) at Monza....and not only did he walk away, he finished!!
IN THE POINTS!

Who says F1 cars are as fragile as an egg?

They are! He lost front wing, floor parts, bargeboards, everything. The fact that he was in the points is something to add to Alonso's legend. (Though not really on the scale of Gilles being third with an useless front wing)

If I had to pick a favourite crash, it would be Kimi's in Germany - quite dramatic looking for the whole of the stadium section at the Hockenheim ring. Anyone remeber Burti there in 2001 as well? - those are good seats.

which race was it that DC took to the air to avoid alonso?...i thought the in-car shot from DC's mclaren was rather dramatic....

Yeah, DC's was a good one, definitely. It was into the NGK-Schikane, Nurburgring.

FF, I don't remember those Oz crashes, got a link to any online footage of them?

Irv, yeah, geez that Burti one in '01 was huge wasn't it? Shame he got invloved in 2 huge shunts in the space of just 3 races, Spa was one of the most scary I've ever seen, Murray Walker once admitted that when he saw Burti's head just still and hung down like that, he really though he was dead, and I remember thinking the same. Thank God he's OK.

Another one which I forgot to put on my list, more scary than entertaining:

Fisichella @ Estoril, Magny-Cours

Webber and Alonso at Interlagos was huge, adn pretty farcical in its own way. Hockenheim was the most dramatic multiple collision of the season, but I think Pizzonia failing to break and ramming Montoya at the start in Malaysia was the worst mistake.

Raikkonen crashing into the back of Pizzonia was pretty good in Spain.

Best crash?

There's nothing good about any of them. Frankly, I find this subject a tad distasteful.

Oh, there are good crashes.
Haven't seen one last year but memorable ones from the past are Coulthard in Adelaide and Schumacher in Jerez.

Why exactly?? Crashes where drivers were hurt were ruled out in the first post....plus if you found it that distasteful why did you come in here in the first place?

There's nothing wrong with a good old crash, PROVIDED THE DRIVER STEPS OUT!

Ok, sometimes they ruin a good race going on, sometimes they create good races too (safety car leading to field bunching etc! )

Honestly,.....some people look down on crashes like they are Motor Sports version of Page 3 topless models, they forget they're part of the sport!

exactly. crashing is part of the sport. nobody driving wants to crash the same way as a goalkeeper in football doesnt want to conceed a goal.

and you would be lying if you said crashing and general danger wasnt why you first tuned into motorsport in the first place. everyone loves to see full on gutsy racing. the result of this is sometimes a crash. i must admit, it wasnt overtaking that kept me from channel surfing, it was a nice crash. we dont like to see people get hurt but we love to bits watching a driver get out of a mangled wreck without a scratch as many would beleive he achieved more than any victory.....well some people.

Yeah...

What first fascinated me about racing was going to Speedway with Dad as a five or six year old, seeing this Sprint Cars hurtle around; occasionally they'd smash into the wall, and roll over, before the driver got out and waved to the crowd! That was what helped get me hooked, the realisation that this is a REAL test, a REALLY beefy, hard, gritty sport.

So long as no one is hurt, I see nothing wrong with talking about crashes

anyone ever see piquet and salazar collide at the german gp in 1982 and the way piquet turned on him?....he looked like a marionette doll....crashes in any form, when seen either first hand or live on tv are truly scary...hair on the back of your neck standing up stuff....but on very rare occasions can provide post 'operatic' drama so to speak....watching piquet lash out at salazar was hilarious.....

I think if it's the crashes you're looking for, then it truly speaks to the poor quality of the money game that is F1. With modern F1 cars, crashes are almost always due to a mechanical failure (unless it's car to car contact), and involve turning a million dollar machine into a million dollar bucket of parts. Hopefully the driver has also not been reduced to bucket form. If that hope is the excitement you're looking for, perhaps one could make money by holding Roman Gladiator tournaments again.
