Sauber Fails Crash Test
Autosport reports that Sauber has suffered a setback in its pre-season preparations after its 2004 car failed a side impact test before Christmas. The C23, which has already passed the much tougher roll-hoop test, will need to be strengthened and resubmitted for the test before it will be allowed to compete in the 2004 campaign. The new test is scheduled for later this month.

Nothing to worry about really, happens quite often.

I thought McLaren had at least 2 goes of trying to get it thru the FIA crash testing

Yep ,at least 2 goes but it was only a small glitch in the grand sceme of things. They had much bigger reasons that they couldn't race the new car-just generaly bad reliability

F1teams are pushing the envelop. There is really no car that passes crashtests in big margians. It would mean the car is far bigger and heavier than it actually needs to be. Just some add an extra patch of carbonfibre and it'll all be ok.

Well put Eddie, and probably that's the way Peter Sauber is thinking of it. The chance that the car won't be ready to race by the end of January, let alone the start of the season, seems minimal.

One of the problems is that when you add weight by making the tub stronger to pass the side on tests you are adding mass that may make the tub fail the front on test (and the other way around as well)

Ah it's not so much of a problem. Every year we get shock headlines yet a couple of weeks later, they have the car out on the track. With all the millions behind these teams, you'd think they'd know how to patch up a car for a crash test...

This is no big news. It's better for it to break than pass with flying colours. It's easier to find the break point if you start by breaking it.
This happens a lot, and is nothing to worry about. The first Stewart grand prix car failed it's first side impact test too. |
