Speed!

Montoya's lap in pre-Q was 1m19.525s. I make that 162.9mph.

Wow.

Very impressive. I guess we won't beat that in Q proper.

Pingguest should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Barrichello did the fastest lap ever

I think Rubens Barrichello just drove the fastest lap ever. He broke Montoya's record of 2002.

80.089s lap is 161.8mph, which is quicker than 161.4mph that Montoya did in 2002.

If it stays dry, I'm convinced we will see new topspeed records tomorrow as well.
368km/h with draft from last year, up to 365 without this year. Amazing stuff.

Martin Brundle said he thought that Montoya's pre-quali time would stand as a record because pre-quali is seen as an "official" session.

We could well do.

Brundle also suggested that the approach to Parabolica may be the fastest par tof the circuit, but there was no speed trap there.

absolutely crazy speeds today. i know that i have raved on about F1 cars being too fast this season, but really, they are too fast. as Tony Jardine said earlier on in the program, at the moment F1 cars are at the absolute edge of the envelope, and we don't know what is going to happen when that edge is exceeded. its amazing, but also quite worrying.

which is where a race car should be. F1 cars are not too fast.

Yes, I hope they have always been close to the envelope.

Why is 161.8mph bad, but 161.4mph not (please feel free to substitute those numbers for any others).

The cars are perfectly safe.

The only bad one this year was Ralfs accident really......and that was because of the concrete walls at Indy more than anything.

Although there will be other things that hold the speeds down, but they will be good changes that encourage more racing hopefully.

That is not an argument, it is just dodging the question.

Why does IRL/Champ Car constanstly pegg the cars speed back on the ovals. Afterall they only slow the cars by a few MPH? Ever little increase in speed adds more risk, and the likelyhood of ever more severe injuries.

When F1 cars have gone off this season, they have been pretty big impacts. The safety tech has made great strides, but I also feel F1 has been very, very lucky not to have major injuries.

Ironically, the increased speed has coincided with the dullest period in the sports entire history.

The cars will be significantly slower next season, but to stand and watch we won't notice that, so it's hardly going to be the end of F1 as some think!

It'll be an improvement if there are significant aerodynamic bans. The key is increasing the braking zones, to allow for more overtaking- speed will not matter so much provided there's some overtaking!

It's all very 'itty bitty' if you know what I mean. Small changes here and there. Something quite radical should be done, admittedly with plenty of warning. Moving the front wing higher 50 mill was done at the start of 2001 and obviously wasn't enough, althogh it sounds like these changes will go a bit further.

The aero changes will be attacking the diffuser which is quite significant.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

Except that they don't know what changes will be implemented yet - if any, didn't Max say that there will be no changes if they can't agree on them by Oct 31st?

They're 80% sure on the aero changes.

If they can't agree by Oct 31, the FIA will impose the rules.

There certainly won't be no change!

Max said they can only force through changes on the grounds of safety, so not all the cost cutting changes suggested earlier in the year. But yes, I am expecting speeds to be down next year, probably through a mix of race distance tyres, aero changes and 2 race engines.

Arn't the major changes planned for 2006, and always have been. The 2005 changes are just short term measures to cut speeds a little.

The 2006 changes 'should' address the aero problems with the current cars.
