Exhausts

Sorry this is not racing based but I need a question answering -

I have a BMW 330 Diesel Sport and last week the turbo went 1 mile from my house. It has been into Williams BMW in Bolton and they have said that the failure has soaked the exhaust in oil which means that I have to REPLACE the WHOLE exhaust system for £1500 according to the dealer.

Is this possible? Can it not be cleaned out? They said there is nothing wrong with the exhaust other than the fact it will smoke for a while till all the oil is burnt off - surely there is a way of cleaning it or are they just after my money. My warranty covers me for up to £1500 per claim but the Turbo was £1500 so I will need to pay for the exhaust?

Any ideas?

most diesels now contain cats and they dont like being soaked in oil, which might be why the say it has to be replaced, but personally io would have the turbo fitted and worry about the exhaust, on the other hand get onto BMW GB AT BRACKNELL and moan at them, quite often the customer who moans at the head office then gets a rather more helpfull phone call from the dealer later, after all how old is your car, surely it shouldn't of failed in the first place? quality car? you get the idea?

It is covered under warranty but they say as the exhaust was soaked because of a turbo failure the exhaust isn't covered!!

Maybe I should just change the CAT and let the rest burn away for a few days!!! Be cheaper than £1500!!!

on a young car if it has low mileage covered under warranty, due to the fact the turbo blow out wasnt your fault you should not have to pay for the exhaust system to be replaced! bmw should Keep moaning

picked the car up this evening and was a nightmare.......more smoke than an atom bomb in japan......it was also rush hour and must have smoked out about 50 people!!!!

Took it on the country lanes and it seems to have blasted the oil away after about 30 mins so It looks like I have saved £1500 on exhaust but now need 4 new tyres at £600!!!

Thanks for your help everyone who posted

LOL
Well done red! Whish i had seen it
Just be aware that the Cat may be damaged from all the oil and/or smoke.
If so this will show up in a roadside pollution test (do you have them there?) so you may want to get it checked out to avoid polluting/getting a fine

I must admit although it is not smoking it does seem to be lower on mpg. About town it is doing 29mpg which is quite low for a 330d. I would expect it to be 34+. It is due a service this week so will have it checked out.

THanks again

Complain, you should not have to pay for anything due to a failure of another part, I would demand the Cat be replaced FOC and maybe even the exhaust as well. These are expensive cars and things like this should not happen
