Hans, head and neck support
Can anyone tel me if there is an alternative to the Hans support, as I'm thinking of fitting one to my F3 car but the £583 + vat price just for the support seems a mighty price. What the hell is it made of ?
Call me a sceptic, but with having to send off your helmet, because of course drilling a hole would tax the brains of most of us, for another £50 +vat ending up with a total of over £700 seems a bit high to me ! Its a great idea, and I know its probably worth every penny if it saves your life, and all that (so why aint everyone got one !) If they were reasonably priced I'd go get it tomorrow !!!!!!!!!!!! So, does anyone else make one. Gadgit. |

You should drill the helmet yourself, it is really easy to do. Or your team could do it for you as well. I've done 2 helmets, and it is no problem....

This is probably an overly-simplistic view, but here goes anyway:
Instead of the HANS device, why couldn't one fit a strap to a helmet, tied to the same places as a HANS, then loop the strap around the back of the seat? Would that even work? Of course, you'd have to fit some sort of quick-release mechanism, but it'd be like doing up an extra belt when you're in the car. |

As of today, no FIA approved alternatives to HANS.

And tying it to the seat could break your neck.

And if you did need to get out quickly, the HANS is only fastened to you and to your helmet, so you don't need to detach yourself from the seat or anything else. Undo your belts and get out as normal.

They are expensive agreed but let's face it..how much is your life worth. I don't have one and haven't used them, but I will this season for sure. The more you race the more inevtiable having a big off becomes and i'll bet at that point you'll wish you'd bought one. Miss a race and pay for it that way if need be

I disagree - there are soo many shunt in this sport and so few occasions where hans is ESSENTIAL... I'll take my chances and be comfortable in the car thanks.

I'm sure that I want one ! and as I said in the opening, I do of course understand the, what's my life worth line. But, we don't all have the best of all equipment when it comes to safety, because we would all be bankrupt if we did, without the racing.
As said by a previous post, it only attaches under the seatbelt straps, so if you pull the belt lock you just jump out with your helmet still on with the straps from the helmet conected to the support only. Does anybody else make them is the question, I just can't see the £700 cost being justified. There must be someone out there that can make one for at least half if not less just for a support bracket !!!!! the rest we can do ourselves. ???? Gadgit. Seriously, you've never tried a HANS, or you wouldn't make the comment about comfort and I doubt you're fully informed on the subject either, or you wouldn't have posted the above at all! Last edited by REALIST; 14 Feb 2005 at 22:25. |
