Barcelona Testing Updated - 17/02/05
Pos. Driver Team Time Laps
1 F. Alonso Renault 01:14:991 110 2 JP. Montoya McLaren 01:15:227 82 3 R. Zonta Toyota 01:15:374 83 4 K. Räikkönen McLaren 01:15:404 71 5 G. Fisichella Renault 01:15:648 63 6 D. Coulthard Red Bull 01:15:713 92 7 V. Liuzzi Red Bull 01:16:143 70 8 M. Webber Williams 01:16:509 92 9 J. Trulli Toyota 01:16:551 97 10 M. Schumacher Ferrari 01:16:639 101 11 A. Pizzonia Williams 01:16:726 54 12 N. Karthikeyan Jordan 01:20:029 81 13 T. Monteiro Jordan 01:22:076 86 http://www.f1racing.net/en/testresults.php?testID=194 The session was marred by a violent accident for Kimi Raikkonen, the McLaren snapped away on the approach to turn 11 and hit the barriers before spiralling across the track. Raikkonen did not require hospital treatment, but the team called for a doctor to attend to him in the motorhome. He is thought to be shaken but OK. The car suffered extensive damage to the left hand side. Trulli gave the new version of the Toyota TF105 a run out - Zonta was in the original TF105. On the testing front - great time again from Renault. Midland Jordan's massively off the pace - the car seemed to have some new aero tweaks to it, including a smaller and different shape rear wing end plate. http://www.f1racing.net/en/photolarg...768&catID=1555 Last edited by Super Tourer; 15 Feb 2005 at 16:39. |

Shunt aside, testing seems to be going well for Renault and McLaren.
Red Bull quietly impressive too. Zonta was in a 2004 Toyota. Jordan are a long way off at the moment - but I think they may pick up a bit of pace in the coming days. |

Just been updated by someone who was following events in Barcelona - on race pace, McLaren seem to be about 5s ahead of Renault on a 20 lap stint.
Also - in back to back comparisons with and without the "horns" - it seems to be giving them 0.2s a lap. |

Wow! thats some pace....until now looked like that the competition is going to be between Renault and Mclaren, but looking at the times reported by KB, Mclaren are going to be miles ahead, and the rest of the pack (including Ferrari) r going to chase..

Whilst i wouldn't call Ferrari and Bridgestone off the pace "depressing" it's worth remembering that its only testing. You can be sure that Ferrari will be up there ("depressingly" in front of the rest i should imagine) come Melbourne. Last edited by Mr V; 15 Feb 2005 at 17:38. |

Interesting to see Liuzzi hangin close to teamate DC and the rest of the top dogs. Nice showing by them.
What can you say about the Jordan, two new drivers in a bad car. Looked like a hard hit for Kimi, glad he's ok. I wonder if Kimi is losing faith in this team, after last years rear wing snapped off, and now this. |

Why would Kimi be losing faith in the team?
These things happen - Michael Schumacher's had a fair few hefty testing shunts over the year. |

Yes shunts happen, but he had a terrible car to work with last year and a couple of shunts due to mechanical failure, and now to have another bad one that sounds mechanical, could wreck your confidence in a teams ability to give you a good car.

Woah , that Kimi shunt must have been huge, stick that chassis in the bin chaps...
EDIT: How many 2005 cars do McLaren have? I wonder if this slight indiscretion might hinder their testing program slightly? Last edited by Sodemo; 15 Feb 2005 at 18:35. |

Most of Schumi's testing shunts have been car failures too. Yes - McLaren came out with a poor car at the start of 2004 - but they turned the situation round in a way few teams could've done - and still won a race. The 2005 car looks fast and reliable. Over several seasons, McLaren is one of the best places to be as a driver. |

Latest on this from McLaren:
It wasn't a car failure as such. Some debris (from the track, I assume) got between a brake caliper and wheel rim, essentially machined a groove, causing a failure. The car will be rebuilt overnight and driven by Pedro de la Rosa tomorrow. |

One other snippet - the transponder at the track has Montoya and Raikkonen the wrong way round.
Kimi's fastest was 1:15.2, Montoya's 1:15.4 |

Klien Red Bull - 1:15.673 79 laps 7. Webber BMWWilliams - 1:15.841 68 laps 8. Barrichello Ferrari - 1:15.912 115 laps 9. Trulli Toyota - 1:16.060 120 laps 10. Heidfeld BMWWilliams - 1:16.077 93 laps 11.de la Rosa McLaren - 1:16.133 61 laps 12. M Schumacher Ferrari - 1:16.188 76 laps 13. Karthikeyan Jordan - 1:19.179 76 laps 14. Monteiro Jordan - 1:19.718 30 laps RBR cars very close and evenly matched Zonta quicker in the interim car than Trulli's new version of the TF105 Jordans still somewhat off the pace. As a reference point the 2004 pole at Barcelona was 1:15.022 - although testing and qualifying times are hard to compare, it gives an indication of the pace. |

Well, it is interesting, take a look ath the above webpage with every lap, and you will see that barrichello´s best lap came on the very last of a 16 lap run, something similar with Montoya and fisichella, very fast laps at the end of a 20 or so lap run, while Coulthard, after a similar run, could do no better than 1:16 high.
Very interesting website, thanks for the link!!! |
