Something at least 200mm I would say, for Oulton, 300mm even better. Prime or zoom?

Maybe you want to see if you can get hold of a Canon f2.8 70-200mm lens.

If you want to have a real play, try and find someone with a sigma 50-500 "Bigma" and you can see what type of shots you can get using different focal lengths. Image quality is decent too, and although not up to Canon L standards, will still give excellent results. In the same boat is the 100-400 L IS, which is the big white Canon drainpipe, similar picture quality to the Sigma, but with optical stabilisation, useful for handholding at the longer focal lengths. Unless you earn silly money, the Canon primes are perhaps a bit out of reach for occasional amateur usage, the 300mm IS f2.8 starting at about £2750 i believe! Having said that, the 400mm 5.6L is a great prime, and can usually be had for about £800, which is on the boundries of serious amateur IMHO. Let us know how you get on!
