For what it's worth... [positive spin]

Some interesting facts/records to come out of the race-

3rd placed Tiago Monteiro is the first Portugese driver to ever finish on the podium.

His teammate, Narain Karthikeyen, is also the first ever Indian driver to score
points.

Minardi, the 'lovable losers' scored 7pts in the race, the equal most the team
has scored in year since they started in 1985.

It is also Minardi's first ever double-points finish in their history (20yrs)

Both Jordan and Minardi have now scored more points than BAR, the team who finished 2nd in the Contructor's Championship last year.

Jordan also have the record (this being the teams last year after being bought
out by the Russian Midland Group to be re badged Midland F1 in 2006) of scoring points every season they have contested, and they have had some shocking cars (from 2003-2005 their cars have been backmarkers, although in 2003 they still manage to win a race).

Technically, the first race since the Dutch GP in 1961 where all who started the race finished it.

Minardi's best result since Webber 'pulled a Bradbury' to finish 5th in Oz 3
years ago.

I think everyone 'did a Bradbury' in this race, as Ferrari in normal
circumstances would not have been quick enough to win the race. Amazingly, both Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello are still in the championship hunt after shocking seasons so far...

Bleu should be qualifying in the top 10 on the gridBleu should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Some others:
  • First time since Belgian GP 1991 when two Portuguese-speaking drivers finished in the podium
  • First time since Detroit GP 1984 when all points were not awarded (back then, 6 drivers finished the race and Brundle was DQed)
  • Counting all drivers as starters, it was a record in first-lap retirements
  • Juan Pablo Montoya suffered first first-lap retirement of his F1 career, in 75th race
  • Christian Klien and Felipe Massa have not race laps at Indianapolis in two years

Doesn't seem correct.

You are essentially saying that a 5th place is better than a 5th place + a 6th place....

under the circumstances... easily!

However, you're probably factually correct... but one could also argue they're equal (one gold medal trumps 10 silver in Olympic tallies)

I guess this also answers the question of what it would take to make the New Radical Minardis and the Jordans competitive...

Didn't Christian Fittipaldi and his Minardi teammate also finish 5th and 6th in the early 90s when Fittipaldi hit his teammate, did a 360 but landed on all four wheels and crossed the finish line? Or was that for 6th and 7th?

You can add JV to the last point there, although his situation is slightly different in that he wasn't at Indy last year, I suppose.

There are some interesting facts there! These odd races supply us with anomalies forever...

Apologises, but I have to remind everyone to keep to the topic. This thread doesn't need to go over the same ground as the other threads.

I'm not sure this is appropriate even as a joke! He's been into the Indy wall twice now at high speed through no fault of his own. Sorry couldn't let that one pass without comment.

No.

Salo, Hakkinen and Irvine also qualified as finishers. At the time of their collision, those 3 drivers had completed more than 90% of the race.

Which brings the total number of finishers to 7.
Which means that all points were awarded.

Is the wink because Jo Gartner never scored points in '85. He only raced in '84 scoring one 5th place (at Monza) in 8 starts.

Berger scored three points in '85 (5th and 6th in the last two races). In '84 he finished 6th in the Italian GP, but was not eligible for points.

Lauda scored plenty of points in '84 (world champion) and '85 his last F1 season.

Actually I think that Indy was good for Montiero to a certain degree. Normally we don't really have a clue how the Midland/Jordans and Minardi drivers have performed. Monteiro really stomped on the Minardis and more importantly Karthikeyen. I was really surprised at the gap he opened up. Less significant was that he was still on the lead lap when the race ended. People have been very negative about Monteiro this year, but he's been improving and I think he's better than most realize. He showed potential in Champ Car - 2003 as well.

What's significant about Midland/Jordan and Minardi scoring points is that it means more money will be given to them for next season. They need it badly, so if anything there was a little justice done with all the garbage that went on.
