Summary of Penalties: V8 Supercar Championship Series, Round 6, Hidden Valley

Summary of Penalties: V8 Supercar Championship Series, Round 6, Hidden Valley
CAMS Media Release
4 Jul 2005

FRIDAY 1 JULY

Matters held over from Round 5: Shanghai International Circuit:

Following an investigation by the IPO, and an admission by the competitor, the Stewards found that car #16, Garth Tander, was in breach of the rules, careless driving (B6.7.2) in regard to an incident with car #12, John Bowe during Race 3. The Stewards imposed a penalty of a drive-through penalty equivalent of 35 seconds, to be added to car #16’s Race 3 time.

Following an investigation by the IPO, and an admission by the competitor, the Stewards found that car #1, Marcos Ambrose, was in breach of the rules, failing to obey the directions of Officials, failing to attend a media and promotional activity away from the track (E6.5.10, B6.8.2, E2.1.5). The Stewards imposed a penalty of a fine of $5,000.

In all other matters investigated from Round 5, no breach of the rules was found.

Matters arising from Practice 1:

Following an investigation by the IPO, and an admission by the team, the Stewards found that Ford Performance Racing was in breach of the rules, when a team member entered into a prohibited area (D3.1, B6.7.15). The Stewards imposed a penalty of a fine of $2,500.

Car #52, Matthew White, exceeded the maximum permitted number of laps during Practice. The Stewards imposed a penalty of a loss of two grid positions in accordance with the Supplementary Regulations.

SATURDAY 2 JULY

Matters arising from Qualifying:

Car #7, Alex Davison, failed to stop at the weigh scales when instructed by an official (D16.5). The Stewards imposed a penalty of a loss of qualifying times to that point. Car #7 represented for weighing.

Car #9, Russell Ingall, failed to stop at the weigh scales when instructed by an official (D16.5). The Stewards imposed a penalty of a loss of qualifying times to that point. Car #9 will start Race 1 from the rear of the grid.

Following an investigation by the IPO, and an admission by the team, the Stewards found that Garry Rogers Motorsport was in breach of the rules, in that car #33 left pit bay prior to pit exit opening (D11.5.12.1). The Stewards imposed a fine of $2,000.

Following an investigation by the IPO, Brad Jones Racing was charged with a breach of the rules, in that car #21 left pit bay prior to pit exit opening (D11.5.12.1). Brad Jones Racing did not admit to a breach of the rules and requested a Stewards Hearing. After hearing evidence and submissions from the IPO and Brad Jones Racing, the Stewards found the breach proven. The Stewards imposed a penalty of a fine of $2,000.

Other matters:

WPS Racing was found to be in breach of rules, failure to attend Team Managers’ Briefing (D4.2.2). The Stewards imposed a penalty of a fine of $750 (repeat offence).

Matters arising from Race 1:

The following cars/drivers received a drive-through penalty during Race 1: Car #50, Paul Weel, driving infringement on car #88, Steve Ellery; and Car #88, Steve Ellery, driving infringement on #50, Paul Weel.

Following further investigation by the IPO, and an admission by the competitors, the Stewards found:
+ Car #50, Paul Weel, to be in breach of the rules, careless driving (B6.7.2), and imposed a penalty of a fine of $2,500; and
+ Car #88, Steve Ellery, to be in breach of the rules, careless driving (B6.7.2), and imposed a penalty of a fine of $5,000.

SUNDAY 3 JULY

Matters arising from Race 2:

In all matters investigated from Race 2, no breach of the rules was found.

Matters arising from Race 3:

The following cars/drivers received a drive-through penalty during Race 2:
+ Car #25, Steve Owen, driving infringement on car #10, Jason Bargwanna.

Following an investigation by the IPO, concerning passing under yellow flags, no breach of the rules was alleged. As it was apparent that without contravening any rule car #888 had passed car #24, the Stewards, in excise of their authority under rule A10.1.3.8 and to correct the error, amended the classification to place car #888 behind car #24 in the results of Race 3.

TSR has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Seems to me that the IPO is starting to became a nice little earner for Aussie Bernie AVESCO Xmas party. At the end of Rd 5 I wonder what the total of the slush fund is-- it would be interesting to see how much it is.

Why wasn't the fine increased to reduce the number of hearing requests... ?

The $5000 fine, that was oraginally a suspened sentence, wasn't? It was for hitting car #2 (Mark Skaife's Holden Commodore)at Barbagallo?

You know - careless driving and things like that aside most of these are just stupid mistakes the teams make. I wonder what the penalty would be for something really horrid - like farting in the presence of TC?

Like, how would you 'forget' to go to a Team Managers' briefing? They are programmed - you get a piece of paper telling where to be and when. Same goes for drivers' briefings and autograph sessions.

Makes one wonder if all those rules are made up just to generate revenue.

And the money goes to CAMS - who administer the rules. Maybe the IPO should look at why Holden are suddenly winning races again, now that Tom's back. Or am I just a nasty conspiracy theorist.

Fines go to CAMS, not AVESCO...though it is a common misconception, so you can be forgiven.

Maybe CAMS might make a contribution to a facility in your area to replace Oran Park......

Thank you for that Just Do It, I did not know that CAMS get the dollars ( But it was still good to have a dig at AVSECO). And I agree with perhaps CAMS could put that money to good use, or is that a bad two words ( good use ).

Thanks also to resisturban for all you info regarding the fines, but I thought that there were more fines handed out at China??????

in my opinion the penalties to weel and ellery are a disgrace. yes they deserved a drive through penalty, but to now fine drivers for on track discretions as well, id very poor. wouldn't happen in football, smells of revenue raising to me

Not in this catagory it doesn't. It goes back to Tega who distribute it at the end of the year between the teams. Not sure if it is the whole 100% of dollars though.

Without harsh penalties you will get repeat offenders (and even they dont learn), and you will get lack of respect for both rules, other competitors and fans.

At the end of the day you want to see fair racing, you want to know your favourite driver is going to be at the session you've been lining up hours for, you want all the teams, drivers and managers to have been briefed on things that are important by those who set the rules (and of course if you dont go you wont know and you'd be up for another fine).

Yes, some seem unnecessary but you get that in many sports.

Ok, well maybe I stand corrected. I am flipping sure that I read it somewhere or was told that the fines go to CAMS?

CAMS is responsible for administering the penalties to the V8Supercar participants, however the funds accumulated from these fines eventually make their way to TEGA.....

I presume these "free dollars" are amongst those used to fund the acquisition of the WPS L2 franchise licence slot at the start of this year. Who knows, if the boys in the teams keep playing up, the Kelvinmonster will soon have enough cash to fund some more buybacks

Has the IPO changed the rules for penalties............

Angry Ambrose centre stage
By Ray Kershler
July 15, 2005

WHETHER he likes it or not, Marcos Ambrose is going to be the centre of attention all the way to the end of the V8 season.

After all, he is a dual champion trying for three titles in a row.

He's entitled to command the stage.

Win or lose he will leave the V8s to try his hand in America next year on the tough NASCAR circuit.

That announcement has had a mixed reaction. On one hand he is seen as jumping ship to chase personal glory.

On the other, success would reflect well on the V8 Supercar series.

This season started with Ambrose expected to win his third championship with the Stone Brothers Racing team.

He has led from Round 1 but, perhaps sensing a crack in his character after a clash with Rick Kelly last year, other drivers began to be more critical of his style both on and off the track.

Then in Perth he reacted badly to a black flag and points penalty, accusing stewards of having an ulterior motive.

Ambrose's over-reaction was surprising. His later apology was extraordinary.
The humbling backdown, which those in the know say was actually written by the sport's officialdom, included what rival teams refer to as a "community service" clause where he is now required to perform such things as extra autograph signing sessions.

And this is where Ambrose and V8 officials beg to differ. Ambrose wrote to Avesco in the middle of last year objecting to the off-track workload being imposed on all drivers.

Avesco requires drivers to promote their sport and Ambrose maintained this was impinging on the drivers' responsibilities to their own team sponsors.

Ambrose declined to be interviewed for this article but insiders reckon that letter is when the stand-off between the sport and its champion began.

In the eyes of those close to him, his cards were marked.

Even so, the $5000 fine announced at the last round for the seemingly trivial offence of skipping an official cocktail party in China raised eyebrows, especially as another 10 drivers also missed the party (they sent apologies).

Senior V8 officials ridicule any suggestion they are picking on Ambrose, pointing out heavy $10,000 fines imposed on other drivers, such as the relatively inexperienced Paul Dumbrell.

But the sport's "sheriff", Peter Wollerman, concedes officials are paying more attention to the detail of the rules and regulations.

Ambrose, by his actions and attitude, has lost a few friends at the track this season.

Others admire his strength of purpose and determination not to be seen as a puppet for officials to manipulate.

One thing is not in dispute.

Ambrose is an exceptionally talented driver and it is unlikely the large number of Ford fans will care too much about his relationship with officials as long as he wins his third title.

As to his popularity, well, that's now in the court of public opinion.
