Adrian Newey has told this week's Autosport he will stay at McLaren for "at least another year".
Good news. |

Well, good news for McLaren. Less so for Williams if rumours about them trying to entice him back were true...

If it's onyl a one-yer contract, you suspec thtat the same issues will emerge within a year. Adrian has other long-term interests, and I suspect that if he can guide McLaren to another title he will feel that he has nothing left to achieve.

Indeed, i believe he would love to leave on a high note, and sensing the opportunity, he'd want to achieve it before leaving F1 for good and start on other interest.
The one-year contract meant that he isnt ready to commit to the long term future and be tied down, leaving room for future plans. Although this news isn't surprising, it is good news for Mclaren to be able to retain their star personnel. |

I hope he returns to McLaren next year as well, I wanna see Montoya at the top of the standings, and Newey is a big piece in that puzzle.

If Newey does retire from F1 at the end of next year, with Rory Byrne already out of the sport, it leaves a huge gap in engineering talent in the sport. I believe that, between the two of them, their cars have won every drivers' title since 1991. That may change this year of course!
It will be a sad day for the sport if Adrian goes, as it was when Rory announced his retirement. |

Let us look on the positive side - it opens up two major positions for existing talent to graduate (well Costa has already been doing his bit, he will just not have the presence of Rory any more).
There will be many, many incredibly talented people capable of filling the holes. It is not like these two individuals are the dominant factor in the designs of the cars. |
