Which wide angle ?
Here's my conundrum...
I have a Canon 10D and have made do with a 28 to 135mm zoom for ages, now I've come to terms with the fact I need a wide (wide !) angle lens, I have a budget of up to around £400. Prime or zoom ? Canon or Sigma ? Any thoughts (or better still personal recomendations) would be most welcome. |

look for a 70-200mm f2.8 sigma lens. It's a good lens, and you can probably get a second hand one in mint condition for you budget. I did.
And then, once you've got to grips with that, get a x2 convertor. |

I took a lot of pit shots during the Silverstone LMES and found I was struggling to compose the images as I would like, and as I used to be able to with my Canon A1 and a 28mm.
I'm looking for wide angle in as much as once the 10D's smaller image sensor has been taken in to account, I will still have the equivelant of a 28mm or wider. I have everything covered from 50mm upwards (well, up to 300mm anyway !) so I'm strictly looking for rather w i d e... Thank you very much for the replies so far, it is appreciated. |

The Canon 17-40 f4L is highly regarded by Canon users. It's just over £500 new but Ffordes have got a mint second hand one for £449. I got a new one and got £70 cashback with the 20D. It's f4 throughout, has some rain protection, has the lovely USM and comes with a hood - oh and it's lovely and sharp.
That said the Sigmas are also supposed to be quite good (cheaper & 2.8 at wide end but cheaper build too). Have a look at dpreview.com at the canon lens forum - you'll find all sorts of useful stuff there. |

And if you want to go REALLY WIDE, Microglobe will sell you a brand new, Canon fit Sigma 8mm F4 lens for just a tad shy of your 400 quid - translates to around 12mm with the 1.6x factor on 10D/20D's. Other than that, the Canon 17-40mm F4 is a nice lens too, as is the 24-70mm F2.8. Spoilt for choice really....

Well...to put you out of your misery I bought a Sigma AF 15-30mm F3.5-4.5 EX DG. Too early for a review, though initial impressions are very favourable.
It's physically larger (and heavier) than I had imagined, but it is just what I was looking for. Very pleased. Thanks for the comments and interest shown. |

If you still have some pennies left over ($200) there's also the Peleng 8mm fisheye. You get a small amount of vignetting - or a circular image on full-frame cameras - and it's manual too - but great fun...

My favourite genreal purpose lens is my Sigma DC 18-125 zoom.
It is intended for Digital SLRs. Very handy wandering around the pits and getting candid shots of people and machines. But it is long enough to use in some on track situations. |

I sometimes use a Sigma 15-30 or a 15mm fisheye (depending on what I want to hump around).
The Sigma is a nice lens, has a warm tone to it and I shoot with 1DMK's and 1Ds's. So the crop factor on the 1DMk2 does knock the wide angle a little but not too much. This was shot with the 15-30... Andrew... (well doh - just saw you bought one!! HA!) |
