2006 Formula One Awards
Ok folks, with just over a week until the Formula One stars hit the track at the first Grand Prix, it is time to put your money where your mouth is and let everyone know what you think will happen.
Categories are as follows: WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION Speaks for itself. WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION As above. MOST IMPROVED DRIVER As above. MOST IMPROVED TEAM Again. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Ditto. STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Awarded to the driver who does not win the world championship, and does not necessarily improve the most, but performs outstandingly all season and is deserving of recognition for such. BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS As above, but for teams. And the creative awards ..... RACE OF THE YEAR Let us know what you think will be the race of the year and why. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR Tell us who will pass who for the best move, and describe it. BIGGEST CONTROVERSY What will shake the sport most in 2006? Here is what I think:
WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION Fernando Alonso. The only thing that I think will stop him is the internal squabble surrounding the departing driver. WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION Honda will just pip Renault. Their two strong drivers will prevent a world drivers championship though. MOST IMPROVED DRIVER Rubens Barrichello. Unusual for an old hand to win such an award, but I've got a good feeling about him this year. MOST IMPROVED TEAM Honda. They really seem to have taken to the V8 formula. I expect improvements from Midland, BMW and Ferrari also. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Nico Rosberg is a special for this one. STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Mark Webber. I think he will string together a season of consistent, feisty and fast drives this season. He may only be battling for the tail of the points, but I'm expecting a more mature driver this year. BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS BMW Sauber. They will have a solid and consistently improving season. And the creative awards ..... RACE OF THE YEAR US Grand Prix. After last year's debacle I expect F1 to put on a show for the stateside audience. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR Kimi Raikkonen on Juan Pablo Montoya at Suzuka. Kimi gets in a tangle at the start and charges throughthe field from the back. With six laps to go he is all over the back of his teammate for the last podium position. Raikkonen sticks to his gearbox for a couple of laps, showing his nose frequently. Finally he shocks everybody when he fires down the inside of Montoya at the 2nd Degner. Montoya has to take evasive action. Somehow Raikkonen holds onto it, running wide and putting two wheels on the grass. Montoya gets a better run and begins pulling alongside Kimi on the way to the hairpin. As they approach the braking zone Montoya is slightly ahead through the right kink. Kimi is the last of the late brakers, locks up the inside front and makes it stick down the inside. Montoya tries to make it work around the outside, but makes contact with Kimi and spins out - he retires. The following lap he tries to throw his helmet at Kimi from behind the armco, but misses. BIGGEST CONTROVERSY Aside from Montoya's helmet throw, the biggest controversy will be Eddie Irvine buying the Ferrari team during the season, sacking Felipe Massa and hiring himself as driver. He will then source the cast-off Super Arrows A23, paint it red and put Michael in it while he drives the F2006. |

WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION - Alonso. I want to say Michael but not sure how close Ferrari are right ow and if they can make that ground up on Honda and Renault.
WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION - Honda. With Rubens as the second driver they now have 2 competitive drivers who won't make stupid lunges or daring passes the likes of Sato liked to do! More finishes means more points. MOST IMPROVED DRIVER - Button. Will push Alonso hard for most of the year, will win his first race. MOST IMPROVED TEAM - Honda. Shown already they've moved forwards in terms on pace, no reason this won't continue all season. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Rosberg. Not sure how well the STR cars wil run yet or if the other teams will complain if their performance is deemed unacceptably good due to their "break" in the rules. Rosberg seems to have a good head on him, will score some points. STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Michael Schumacher. Will play some part this year, win some races and drag Ferrari into contention but too much of an ask. BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS - Williams. Webber will score more points that the car perhaps deserves. RACE OF THE YEAR - Monaco. Top drivers make mistakes and an unfancied winner will sail thru the chaos OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR - Raikkonen having to charge thru the field will zoom past team mate Montoya on the outside of a bend before pair later clash and both end up in gravel / wall / pond BIGGEST CONTROVERSY - JPM walk out. After several failures and decisions going to Kimi, JPM quits. |

Alonso WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION Renault MOST IMPROVED DRIVER Fisichella MOST IMPROVED TEAM Honda ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Rosberg STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Monteiro BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS Williams RACE OF THE YEAR Siverstone - Barichello, Button & Alonso all lead at various parts of the race, before Jenson Button slips past Alonso in traffic and goes on to take the win. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR Monaco - Ralph overtakes his brother going through the tunnel BIGGEST CONTROVERSY Torro Rosso sandbag the first few races, and then blitz to take the front row at Imola. After protests from Ferrari, the FIA decide to restict their V10's by another 30% before the race. |

It is some time since we have seen an 'unworthy' champion, ie one who picks up points and ends the season with one or two wins and lots of finishes, while the true champions are sharing the wins around but failing to finish a lot.
I can see this as a potential situation for 2006. Alonso, Raikkonnen, Montoya taking the wins and Michael, Jenson, Rubens winning the title with consistent performances. So lets go with the wiley fox and plump for Schumacher and Ferrari. Rookie: Luizzi, Most improved: Klein. Striling Moss award: Raikkonnen. Team: Sauber. Race of the Year: Canada Ferrari's first win 1 & 2. Overtaking: Get real1 Probably Webber moving from 6th on the grid to lead into Copse before spinning off. Controversy: Alonso allowing Kimi to pass and clinch World Constructor for McLaren. Chew on that lot! |

WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION
Michael Schumacher WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION Toyota MOST IMPROVED DRIVER Jacques Villeneuve. MOST IMPROVED TEAM It's a tie between Toyota and Red Bull Racing for me. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Rosberg. Although I think Yuji Ide will manage too impress. STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Michael Schumacher. Another master class in how to win a championship. BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS Super Aguri, for doing the almost impossible and completing their first season. RACE OF THE YEAR Suzuka. It's going to be the year of 'Suzuka Specials' with Toyota and Honda battling for the victory. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR Rubens Barrichello sliding up the inside of Button at the final chicane of Suzuka to take Honda's first win. BIGGEST CONTROVERSY Toro Rosso sandbagging their car and blitzing the field at Monaco, followed by months of the FIA and teams complaining to anyone who will listen. |

WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION
The driver with the most points at the end of the season (subject to official confirmation). WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION The team with the most points at the end of the season (subject to official confirmation). MOST IMPROVED DRIVER That'll be the one that ends up in a Champ car in 2007. MOST IMPROVED TEAM Has to be Super Aguri. To get a 2002 chassis onto a 2006 grid is no mean feat. And certainly by Imola they should be so much better. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Rosberg doesn't appear to have any competition. STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS The driver with the......................................................... BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS The team with the............................................................ RACE OF THE YEAR Could be anywhere, except Hungaroring. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR Flav on Ron in the pitlane as he goes to congratulate Fernando on yet another walk-over victory (Rons cars having both retired due to engine oil leaks-caused by the pistons exiting the engine yet again). BIGGEST CONTROVERSY Has got to be STR and their V10.Plus the fact that nobody of any particular interest appears to have signed up for 2008. |

The first two, given it is rather impossible to pick, I answering who I hope will win them (PMA and all that).
WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION Michael Schumacher. WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION Ferrari. MOST IMPROVED DRIVER Nico. MOST IMPROVED TEAM Aguri. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Nico. STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Trulli. BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS Williams. And the creative awards ..... RACE OF THE YEAR The final round. It will be supreme because the situation going into it, with regards those in contention for the titles, will be: (contenders listed alphabetically) WCC: Ferrari/Honda/Mclaren/Renault. WDC: Fernando/Jenson/Kimi/Michael. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR There will be a 3-4 car, side-by-side, run all the way around the banking at Indy, and they all sort themselves out through turns 1 and 2 without any collisions. The cars will all be in the top 6, on merit, at the time. BIGGEST CONTROVERSY I am going with two: 1) It will emerge the above overtaking was fixed. 2) Bernie Ecclestone will die (not necessarily related to the fixing revelation). |

WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION
Alonso - driving without the pressure of last year in an evolution of a car whose true speed we only really saw at Suzuka and Shanghai in the second half of last season. WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION Renault. But it'll be very close (good good). MOST IMPROVED DRIVER One of the Toyota pair. MOST IMPROVED TEAM With such a low base point at times last season, this can surely only be Williams. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Nico Rosberg. STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Michael Schumacher (depending on Ferrari competitiveness?) or David Coulthard, for proving that youth isn't everything and for producing 'the goods' weekend in, weekend out. BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS Midland. For showing they do care about F1 and, who knows, maybe exhibiting even the tiniest bit of the old Jordan spirit. In the likely event of this not being the case, Red Bull can surely only get better, but they'll be pushed by BMW Sauber. And the creative awards ..... RACE OF THE YEAR Silverstone, because I'm not going this year. Or see next. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR On the back of shock news that Jenson Button and not Giancarlo Fisichella will replace Massa at Ferrari in 2007, we reach Brazil with Alonso nine points ahead of Michael Schumacher in the championship. Barrichello gets pole, ahead of Raikonnen, Alonso, Montoya, Schumacher, Trulli, Button and Massa. Barrichello's usual home GP luck strikes and his engine blows up at the first corner, causing Alonso to spin to the back of the field. The McLarens race into a lead and, roared on by the crowd, Montoya overtakes Kimi. Kimi stays out during a brief rainshower while Montoya pits. Halfway through his stop, Alonso and Fisichella pit together and all the McLaren mechanics abandon Montoya's car to do Alonso's pit stop (he is stuck behind Fisi). Kimi's engine blows up. Button assumes the lead and looks set to win his first Grand Prix. He is chased by MS and Massa, and in an effort to prove his commitment to Ferrari lets both of them pass. Alonso is struggling in traffic down in ninth, so victory would assure MS his eighth WDC. But fired up by the crowd, Massa senses victory. Starting the last lap, MS and Massa come across a disgruntled Fisi who forces MS wide. Having tailed his team mate all the way up the hill and over the grid, Massa dives to the inside and overtakes Schumacher to win his home race and stick two fingers up to his employers. Or something like that. BIGGEST CONTROVERSY Jenson Button states he his happy to remain at Honda in 2007. And then moves teams anyway. |

My answers
WORLD DRIVERS CHAMPION
Alonso. I see it happen quite similarly as last year. Renault starts very strong and then defense the lead well. I think it is closer though, the gap between the champion and runner-up will be somewhere between 5 and 12 points. WORLD CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPION Renault will take this one too. McLaren suffers reliability problems again and Massa isn't as good as Fisichella. MOST IMPROVED DRIVER Compared to what? If compared to last year, I would say Fisichella who was quite disappointing. MOST IMPROVED TEAM BAR was disappointment last year, I expect Honda do easily better than that now. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Rosberg has best car of them, so he will get most points I think. Speed is not a bad driver either. And would you count Liuzzi (4 races) as a rookie? STIRLING MOSS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR DRIVERS Button. This could be like 2004 again for him. Maybe he could finally take his first win, but not championship. BAR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AWARD FOR TEAMS Super Aguri started late but seems like they are on the grid. Let's see what can they do with their own car then... And the creative awards ..... RACE OF THE YEAR There will be many memorable races, but I think that Monaco can bring some surprises again. OVERTAKING MOVE OF THE YEAR Montoya doing risky move at last lap of Montreal race. It will work and the Colombian wins. BIGGEST CONTROVERSY Toro Rosso will score points in Bahrain or/and Malaysia and controversy starts about the rev limit of V10s. |
