Standing behind tree = very good choice.

Running away from it, while understandable and instinctive = not very good choice.

Fortunately he didn't get too far.

I've been chased by a car through a corn field before now - that tree looks like a good bet - but I think I would have preferred to have been elsewhere!!!!!

By the way - apparently the driver was following me looking for the way out!!!!!!!!

1 The marshal in question looked to be standing in a prohibited area
2 Why does he run ONTO the stage, is this the only escape route?
3 The cameraman does not flinch, unless his kit is on a tripod and he is running!
4 Good idea to move slightly from the tree. apparently solid objects can move a surprising distance when assaulted (A certain assistant chief incident from Oulton will tell you this)
5 10/10 for looking nonchalent after running like rabbit!

as spectators at rallies you are told to never stand on the outside of corners, i don't see why it should be very different for marshals. only one i can see from that clip is the corner is blind, so maybe thats why he chose to stand behind the tree on that side of the road. If i needed to be on that side, it looked the most solid thing to protect me from harm, although i'm not sure i'd have been standing that close to it....!

The more I look at it, the more I think he was sensible not lucky, and it's Robin's comment that makes me realize it. I'm sure there is a crowd in the area behind, and you often find that they will build up behind a camera, because it's the best view - that's why the camera went there in the first place. There's also a big crowd opposite, so the marshal is ideally placed to be aware of all of them.

Next, he's behind a big tree, which is the perfect protection - I'd sooner that than a concrete wall TBH.

Advice not to stand on the outside of a corner is normal, unless you're protected, which he is. Doesn't work for large groups because you can't all get behind the tree!

Finally, he's fairly composed even when running away, and turns back to the car quickly.

I say well done, then. The only problem is that his instinctive reaction is to run from behind the tree, which is the wrong one. In which case, he's standing in the wrong place. If you don't have the courage of your convictions...

Mind you, judging by all of the above, I think it was a good decision of someone to put the treee there in the first place!

Slightly off track (not as much as the car though) the use of whistles on rally stages seems to be on the decline. Might be partly to do with the decline in rally marshals numbers. Do know of one MUSV rally where they were told not to use whistles because of enviromental concerns.

He was lucky. He ran away from the tree in line with the car, aiming to keep the tree between him and seriously filled Y fronts. The car hit the tree centre-on so it stopped. Had the car clipped the tree nearer the front or rear it would have spun and carried on basically in the same direction and mowed him down.
Personally, I think the best place he could have stood to avoid this was in the nearest pub.
