Homologation
Max is still going ahead with engine homologation, this despite a recent technical group meeting which voted against it.http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=35936

Can someone explain in laymans terms what this means ?
Are all cars going to get the same engine and if so whose will it be or is all further development banned after 2008 meaning whoever has the best engine at the time will continue to have the best engine since the other manufacturers will not be allowed to develop theirs and hence catch up... Confused pdman |

The second explanation is correct. Teams will spend a huge amount before the start of 2008, but after that they will be stuck with teh same engine, posisbly having to rebuild it constantly if it's unreliable, and every private team will want the same engines for the next 3 years. I believe it's called cost-cutting.....

Exactly, so if you have a bad engine, you're stuck with it. I don't agree....whether you're calling it cost cutting or not.

It will be an interesting project for the Scrutinisers ....checking replacement engine parts are in no way modified ... think it will be a case of who can modify the engine whithout being detected ... and I know who my moneies on ...

Well, there will be certain areas that are allowed to be developed.
So, from year to year, there will be a degree of improvement. It just won't be in the way we have grown accustom. Given that some areas will be allowed to be developed, it makes you wonder how it is going to cost-cut...the teams will just spend the resources on those areas they can change. (Let's not forget, too, the extra legal costs as the teams hire more lawyers in order to wrangle over what "development" means.) |

You can see where this is going. No manufacturer teams, just engines supplied to the likes of Williams,Mclaren etc.Just like the good old days. Last edited by Marbot; 18 May 2006 at 01:55. |

So, if I was an idependent team I would sign a 1 year deal with X company, when Y's engine is prooven to be the best I would then jump ship, sure I would have to pay them a squillion, as they know that they have the best but that is OK, it is all in the name of cost cutting.
The other senario, BMW has a dog of a motor, simple they start to buy their motors from some one else, like Cosworth, and brand them Mini, or evan Fiat develop their own engine, which is provided to Ferarri (like the 80's) the fact that everyone who developed the old dog works on the new one is just a fluke... Maybe we could see the return of names like Aisatach, wouldn't that be good... |

So, there will be development: it will just be different. Essentially, there is enough of a grey area to satify the FIA's thirst for such thiings, . |
