The new extended ABT Audi TTR
DTM --- April 6, 2001

The ABT team revealed their new extended Audi TT-R which they will compete in the DTM this year. A new rule change that was introduced this winter has allowed the team to extend the length of the car. The car has now got the same wheelbase as Opel and Mercedes has got. And this should fix the lack of downforce the Audis suffered last year compared to the others. The DTM press pack had to wait for the ABT Audi team to arrive, the team was busy making a short shakedown at a carpark just before they left for the launch at Hockenheim. The team will get it first proper run at Hungaroring next week. The ABT drivers are: Laurent Aiello (FRA), Christian Abt (GER), Mattias Ekström (SWE) and Marin Tomczyk (GER). "Now we all have the same basis. But it's still up to each team to build a competitive racing car" says Hans-Jürgen Abt. His goal for this year remains clear: "We want to go for the podium, and we want to fight for victory. That's why we compete with heart and soul in motorsport."

If this is what it takes to make the Audi TT competitive then make it as long as they like as it doesn't matter too much what it looks like only how well it performs. Never judge a book by it's cover sound familiar???

The problem is that the wing mounting is dictated by the shape of the back of the car- hence it looks like a shopping trolley....

You can't help thinking they might have had a much easier time if they'd started with something like an A4 which already has a longer wheelbase, and a nice flat bootlid to mount the wing on....
