PEUGEOT’S FIRST DAY ON THE TRACK
The Peugeot Sport Coupes flashed at the start line for their much awaited come back to the BTCC at a wet and windy Brands Hatch, Peugeot are desperately trying to catch up on their overall track time compared to the race favourites Vauxhall Saturday was devoted to setting the teams up and giving the drivers a chance to settle themselves in for the next days free practice in the morning and the afternoon’s qualifying. The test day is split between Production Class who are 19 cars strong today and Touring Class consisting of a Peugeot – Vauxhall head to head in the first free practice, the results of which are as follows: Jason Plato: GBR Vauxhall Astra Coupe 51.949 @ 23 Laps – 84.97 MPH Phil Bennett: GBR Vauxhall Astra Coupe 52.347 @ 28 Laps – 84.32 MPH Matt Neal: GBR Peugeot 406 Coupe 52.630 @ 30 Laps – 83.87 MPH Steve Soper: GBR Peugeot 406 Coupe 53.077 @ 32 Laps – 83.16 MPH Yvan Muller: FRA Vauxhall Astra Coupe 53.540 @ 16 Laps - 82.44 MPH James Thompson: GBR Vauxhall Astra Coupe 57.619 @ 14 Laps - 76.61 MPH Second Free Practice Yvan Muller: Vauxhall Astra Coupe 49.013 @ 28 Laps Jason Plato: Vauxhall Astra Coupe 49.027 @ 33 Laps James Thompson: Vauxhall Astra Coupe 49.133 @ 33 Laps Phil Bennett: Vauxhall Astra Coupe 49.743 @ 31 Laps Matt Neal: Peugeot 406 Coupe 49.995 @ 25 Laps Steve Soper: Peugeot 406 Coupe 50.193 @ 28 Laps Dan Eaves: Peugeot 406 Coupe 50.499 @ 31 Laps Dave Pinkny: Alfa Romeo 147 57.452 @ 3 Laps PEUGEOT WILL FIGHT TO THE END Brands Hatch in Kent saw the official start of the 2001 British Touring Car Championship, Matt Neal, Steve Soper and Dan Eaves were all present and correct for their first public viewing. The three Peugeot were looking good for the grid, but as the day progressed the lack of test time showed minor problems in the cars electrics, battling back all three cars achieved respectable times, and trailed only half a second behind the four Vauxhalls. Working their way to qualifying time Matt Neal had produced the fastest test times, unfortunate Matt had been experiencing some gear change problems, between 5th and 6th gear and the flywheel clutch, causing a loss of speed out of the corners. Eventually it was decided that Matt’s car could not participate in the qualifying session, due to time constraints. Matt Neal will start at the back of the grid for tomorrow’s race. The drivers two best laps will be recorded and their speed will determine their qualifying positions, qualifying as follows: Results after Feature race qualifying: Pos No Name Nat Car Time MPH 1 4 Yvan Muller FRA Vauxhall Astra Coupe 48.942 90.19 2 5 Jason Plato GBR Vauxhall Astra Coupe 49.093 89.91 3 9 James Thompson GBR Vauxhall Astra Coupe 49.148 89.81 4 27 Phil Bennett GBR Vauxhall Astra Coupe 49.708 88.80 5 44 Steve Soper GBR Peugeot 406 Coupe 50.414 87.56 6 22 Dan Eaves GBR Peugeot 406 Coupe 50.604 87.23 7 15 David Pinkney GBR Alfa Romeo 147 1:24.805 52.05 |
