Burti out for the rest of the season?
Luciano Burti, the Prost driver who suffered a massive accident at last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, could be out for the rest of the season according to a member of the FIA medical team.
Gary Harstein, who attended to Burti at the crash site, believes that although the Brazilian did not suffer serious injuries, it would be prudent to wait and further observe his progress. "We would want him to go a certain period of time, longer than the next race (the Italian Grand Prix) at any event, before he even thinks about getting back in the car," he said to Reuters. Harstein made it plainly clear that he believes that anyone who has been involved in such an accident, with the potential consequences for damage to the brain, would need to show no symptoms of injury for an extended period of time before being allowed to drive. "We like people who have had severe concussion to be totally asymptomatic for a significant amount of time before any chance of a second concussion," Hartstein said. "If my son -- with what I know about head injury -- were to have an impact like Luciano had I would probably want to see him asymptomatic for at least four to eight weeks before getting back in the car. "I would advise that he not get back in the car," he concluded. It is probable, therefore, that Burti will miss, at the very least, the Italian Grand Prix next weekend and Ferrari tester, Luca Badoer, has already been mentioned as a potential replacement. I hope he dont race so we finnaly could see Luca Badoer in a F1 GP. what are your toughts ? |

It will do him good to have some time to recuperate - after a shunt like that he definitely needs it!
I hope Webber or Wilson gets to replace him...although with Badoer's Ferrari/Prost links it's not looking too likely. |

Perhaps Stephan Sarrazin could get the ride, being French and all.
Another name runoured to be in with a shot is Tomas Enge, who has signed to test for the team in the final few months of the year. As for Burti, the whole F1 circus would be relieved to know that he escaped the accident relatively unscathed. And after two massive accidents within 3 races, maybe it would be best if he took the rest of the year off to recuperate and prepare for next season. |

Things are a little complicated at Prost.
Diniz seemed to resigned, and Alain is looking for a buyer... I would like to see Mark Webber there, but looks like Luca should be the chosen one... |

Would there be contractual complications as Mark is contracted to rivals Benneton/Renault, whereas Prost is using te customre ferrari engine and Luca test drives for Ferrari. Still, I would love to see Mark in an F1 car sooner rather than later.

I don't see how Webber will drive, if he is still defending 2nd position in F3000 - surely the team wants a driver for ALL the remaining races!

Here's something interesting to ponder...a team can only switch #2 drivers thrice in a year.
Prost started w/ this lineup: 1) Alesi 2) Mazzacane Switch at San Marino: 1) Alesi 2) Burti Jordan fiasco: 1) Frentzen 2) Burti Here's the wild card: De La Rosa was signed to the team temporarially. He was also nominated as the reserve/test driver. Hence, the drivers capable of driving the Prost 2nd car are: Mazzacane, Burti, and De La Rosa. While the FIA in theory could choose to dick with Prost and force them to run Mazzacane (which they won't because of the reason Burti is out plus the Ferrari connection), does this mean that Prost is over quota? Also...would Prost be forced to run this 4th driver for the year due to regulations about exceeding the quota? Can someone please clarify this for me? Victor, good question !!!
I never thought about it. I think Dino or TimD could have some reasonable explanation for that... |

They should be allowed to pick a 4th driver, under these circumstances. I would have thought that the quota was there to keep jobs fairly secure for the drivers
